GOALS

Welcome to Web Active Photos!

Are you ready to discover the benefits of storing photos online?

Let's set some goals we want to accomplish:
  1. Get signed-up with a photo sharing service

  2. Upload photos

  3. Explore some features

  4. Create a profile

  5. Create cool stuff with mashups*
*Mashups are web applications that combine data and/or functionality from more than one source.

FLICKR - PHOTO SHARING

The first thing we must do is select an online photo sharing service. Links to several popular FREE photo hosting services are located on the right-hand column. Of the options available, we have elected to explore Flickr because they have...

a) the world's most popular photo sharing site
b) countless communities of photographers
c) ever-growing numbers of innovative mashups

#1 SIGN-UP

Flickr was a small successful start-up company... now it's owned by Yahoo. This means we need a Yahoo ID (a.k.a. e-mail address) to use Flickr.

a) You already have a Yahoo ID! This means you are ready to CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT using your Yahoo ID and password.

b) You don't have a Yahoo ID? That's OK, you just have make one... Once they give you an ID, then you can CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT.

Now let's go over to Flickr and CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT.

HELPFUL TIP:

WRITE DOWN YOUR YAHOO ID AND PASSWORD... You will want this information later!

If you want to watch a video demonstrating the sign-up process click Here.

#2 UPLOAD PHOTOS

Alright, you are signed-in and ready to upload some photos!

Follow the three easy steps provided...

1. Choose Photos - A browser window will open. Highlight the image file from your local machine and click "submit".

2. Upload Photos - When you are done choosing photos, click the pink "Upload Photos" button.

3. Describe Your Photos - You can name the photos, describe the photos and tag the photos.

HELPFUL TIP:

Tags are like keywords or labels. You can assign as many tags as you like to any photo. If you find a photos very relaxing, tag it with 'mellow' or 'relax' (or both).

So, what are tags good for, and what's the point of it?

Tagging your photos makes it a lot easier to find later; click on a tag word and you can instantly see a list of items you've tagged with that term. But what's really interesting is that you can also view everyone else's tags!

Great Job, you now have your photos online!

#3 EXPLORE THE FEATURES

Flickr has many great features. We will briefly look at three areas...

1. ORGANIZR - This Flickr tool helps you stay organized and can be found by clicking "Organize" on the top menu bar. This is where both Collections and Sets are created. It also allows you to perform common tasks on large batches of photos, such as tagging, changing permissions, or editing timestamps.

2. ORDER PRINTS - Printing from Flickr is easy and very affordable. You can have prints mailed to you or you can pick them up at Traget. From your Flickr homepage, go to "Your Photos". Click on the photo you want to print. Above the photo you will see a list of options, click on "Order Prints" and follow the instuctions.

3. GROUPS - What are your hobbies and passions? There are Flickr groups for almost anything you might be interested in. Click "Groups" on the top menu bar and then use the search box to search for a topic of your interest. Join a group and share your photos and experiences with the world!

Flickr has many great features that will take a little time to figure out. Be patient and don't be afraid to explore!

#4 CREATE YOUR PROFILE

You can quickly change your account information and set-up your Flickr profile...

Click on your username in the top-right corner. From here you can change...

a) buddy icon
b) screen name
c) profile information
d) profile privacy
e) your photo page layout

Take a minute and personalize your profile, or do it later.

#5 MASHUPS

Mashups are web applications that combine data and/or functionality from more than one source.

Like many web 2.0 sites, Flickr has encouraged other people to build their own online applications using images found on their site. Through the use of APIs (application programming interfaces), many people have created third party tools and mashups that use Flickr images.

Let's have some fun with mashups over at FD Toys
